History

The seeds of Angelica Village were sown on a snowy evening in December 2015 when a group of people, young and old, multi-racial and varied in education and background met in a living room and talked about the benefits of community and mutual aid as a means for changing the assumptions of how traditional non-profit organizations work. The goal was to be a community first, with non-profit services provided so that all members could grow in security and resilience.

The original community members were a couple who had experienced homelessness many times, elders who wanted to be part of community and give back, a young woman who left a Native American reservation to find more security and an education and professionals who sought to give and receive in a community setting that challenged the boundaries of a traditional service agency… for example that services were only provided at set times, so if a crisis occurred at 10pm, what was one to do?

A Go Fund Me effort was set up to raise money and $30,000 was raised for a down payment on a home in Lakewood, CO. -and that community of 9 was the seed. As of 2023 there are sixty-one community members from 8 different countries ranging in age from 3 months to 74.
